Our Third Valedictory Service And Prize Giving Day
The Nation Newspaper Correspondent By: Oluwakemi Dauda
Last Week Thursday, the Ikorodu Town Hall was packed by parents and guests at the third graduation and valedictory service of Kith and Kin Educational Schools.
And if what happened last Thursday is relayed in many homes, most parents will pray that their children should acquire sound education.
Sixteen girls and 21 boys, checked in dark blue suites were ushered into a well-decorated expansive hall. The graduating students were accompanied by their teachers and the owner of the school, Chief Kaoli Olusanya, popularly referred to as the Chief Learning Officer (CLO). They all wore the same suite.
Members of the Just Worship Band adorned in native dress, thrilled the gathering. The students used the occasion to showcase their prowess in French language.
Pastor Nelson Adewale Ayodele who chaired the event described the proprietor of the school, Chief Olusanya, as a hero, going by his contributions to the development of education and the community.
Ayodele admonished the students to see the sky as their limit, and advised them not to see themselves as an island of knowledge.
His words: “It does not matter what you know, there are things you don’t know and that is why you must always seek knowledge. People perish because they lack knowledge.”
Olusanya urged the graduating students to acknowledge that there are times to play, read, and seek counsel, among other things. “Kith and Kin has taught you self reliance, deepened your ability to read, analyse, organise, criticise, and articulate your thoughts. You have been trained to be yourself, to be independent minded and be a team player. Learn from one another, collaborate and above all, excel in anything you choose to do,” he urged.
At the event, a certificate jointly signed by the minister of state for Education and Chairman/Managing Director, Chevron Nig. Limited was presented to Master Gaji Michael, who was selected as the sixth runner up in the 2008 Art Competition organised by NNPC/Chevron of which the companies received 260 entries from various schools nationwide.
The event however got to the peak when, following the cutting of the cake, the graduating students lighted candles and said in unison: “We are going to shine our light for the world to see!”
One of the parents, Mrs Coker Omobolanle described the proprietor as someone with a passion for education. “His (proprietor) life is full of benevolence and support for children. Those close to him know how serious he takes the education of the children of the rich and the poor. His kindness, humility and dedication to excellence are his philosophies. Chief Olusanya and more of his kind are needed to make our society a caring and friendly one.”
When he eventually found time to speak with The Nation, Olusanya described the graduation as one of his happiest moments. “This is one of the happiest moments of my life. I am grateful to my wife, my teachers, students, their parents and those who have helped to make the day a joyful one for me. Majority of my students are now in the University-in Nigeria and abroad. This is my greatest joy. Above all, I thank God for keeping me healthy to witness today.

Polution Of Abuja River
18th May 2009. The Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of The Environment, Lagos State.
Sir,
POLUTION OF ABUJA RIVER
We, the Students Representative Council of Kith and Kin Educational Schools, Owode-Ibeshe decry the menace starring us and the entire Ibeshe community on the face as a result of the pollution of Abuja River in Ibeshe. It was during our tour of the environment, as part of our class activities, that we discovered that a multi-national textile company in Ibeshe has turned Abuja River into a toxic waste dump! As a matter of fact, Ibeshe people are agrarian by nature. They had lived on the earning they made from fishing in Abuja River and farming on its surroundings in the time past. But today, this is no longer posssible. Consequently, all the aquatic lives in Abuja River, plants in the neighbouring environment, as well as the entire natural habitat, have been annihilated. The people now live without any thing to fall back on.Hunger and unemployment are on the increase. Not only this, the majority of the rural dwellers now depend on well water and bore holes as sources of water. According to our findings, the underground water is not also safe for use as a result of this degradation. In addition to this, the chemical activities and processes going on the soil pose great threat of imminent danger since the Soil- pH is acidic and could make farm produce realised from this area to induce some health hazards. Little wonder why we are already experiencing several cases of genetic disorders and mutations among new born babies. In fact, you need to go there and see things for yourself. To this effect, we make this distress call, asking for your timely intervention. We believe that action would be taken soon to avert all kinds of danger that are looming. We shall appreciate your immediate response.
Yours faithfully, Joseph Pam Speaker, Kith and Kin Students Representative Council. Cc: The Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of The Environment, Lagos State.

Communique Of The Parents/Teachers Dinner Meeting Held On Friday 11th September, 2009.
PREAMBLE
The meeting started with a drama by the teachers titled “The Good, the bad and the ugly teacher”. The message of the drama was to depict the good teacher as a 21st century teacher, who is students centered. He makes the students think and makes learning interesting. He is friendly and firm. The bad teacher on the other hand is an agrarian teacher, who believes in forcing learning down into the students. The students are scared of him and do not always want him in the classroom. The ugly teacher is not organized, lacks classroom management skill and do not always prepare for his class. CLO PRESENTATION
In his presentation the CLO shared the Vision, Mission and Goal of KKES with the audience. The striking point of the presentation was what makes Kith and Kin Educational Schools different from other schools. They include: 1. We transform and mould students in learning and character. 2. We train students in their authentic ability to pass examinations 3. We follow up on our graduating students admission to universities. 4. We promote students/parents voices in matters concerning the school management. 5. We identify and support the uniqueness of each student/child to excel. 6. We teach leadership and entrepreneurship skills. 7. We prioritise staff professional development. He concluded his presentation by soliciting for the support, collaboration, understanding and contribution of parents in ensuring that the school achieve its goal.
ISSUES
After the CLO’s presentation, the parents went into discussion session. The issues deliberated upon were: 1. School fees. 2. Uniform. 3. Textbook. 4. School lunch. 5. International Examinations. 6. Transportation. 7. School facilities. 8. Hostel facilities. 9. Discipline and exam conduct. 10. Pedagogical reform.
RECOMMENDATION
TEXTBOOK 1. The status quo should remain, whereby parents buy their textbooks. But we are concern at the number of books recommended. We believe this can be reduced considerably to exact number. 2. We frown at parents not providing books for their wards and encourage all to assist the school and the children.
DISCIPLINE AND EXAM CONDUCT 1. When teachers observe students with unethical behaviour, parents should be sent written note ( 3 times). And if there is no change in such a student, a text message should be sent to the parent for a meeting. 2. Parents should give adequate parental care to their wards and monitor the academic activities of their wards. 3. Students in SS3 should not be allowed or encouraged by parents/teachers to write GCE/NECO examinations, until after the senior secondary school certificate examination.
SCHOOL LUNCH 1. Parents are to decide on the system to adopt either to give money to their wards for lunch or bring food from home. 2. For the boarders, the school should take full control on the meal system. 3. The opinion of the school management is to start mandatory school lunch by September 2010.
UNIFORM 1. There should be improvement on the quality and the sewing of the uniform. 2. School shoes should be made available and the quality to be improved upon. 3. The school cardigan should be made available in the school shop for parents to buy for their children in order to keep the children warn during the raining season.
INTERNATIONAL EXAMINATION 1. The cost should be affordable and competitive 2. The programme should not be profit oriented. 3. The parents should be allowed to spread the fees over a period of time. 4. A dedicated account should be opened for the fees right from when the child is in JSS1
TRANSPORTATION 1. More buses should be introduced 2. More prayers and pressure on government to reconstruct the Owode –Ibeshe road. 3. Drivers to be advised to exercise patience and cooperate with parents. 4. Bus assistants should be trained to be customer friendly.
SCHOOL FACILITIES 1. Parents and guardians are impressed that the school has most of the facilities expected. 2. The school sick bay should be upgraded to a standard clinic. 3. Parents should be allowed to conduct regular inspection of the school facilities and comment on improvement that can be made.
HOSTEL 1. More workers should be employed in the hostel. 2. Proper preparation of food in the hostel should be monitored and ensured. 3. Regular fumigation of the hostel environment. 4. The water in the hostel should be properly treated. 5. To avoid stealing and pilfering in the hostel, parents should make adequate provision for their wards. Any child caught in the act of stealing and pilferage should be suspended for two weeks. 6. Roll call should be taken in the hostel after any activity in the hostel to enable the hostel master monitor the students.
SCHOOL FEES 1. School fees increment should be done periodically. 2. Scholarship programme should be expanded to encourage healthy competition among the students. 3. Three week deadline for payment of school fees is supported by the parents.
PEDAGOGICAL REFORM 1. There should be a blend between the mechanistic/behavioural approach of teaching and the constructive approach. 2. Teaching and learning should be student centered. 3. The individualism of students should be respected. 4. Students should be encouraged to participate in class work and assignment. 5. As part of the reform students should be exposed to more activities that align with what is taught in the class for them to develop skills in those areas.
RESOLUTIONS At the end of the programme the parents resolved as follow: 1. The school should continue with the transportation services as many of the parents work outside Ikorodu. 2. Parents agreed to sponsor a full page advert in a national newspaper to call the attention of Lagos State Government to the bad condition of Owode-Ibeshe Road and solicit for the reconstruction of the road.

Kith and Kin Wins Best Essay Competition - We Are The Future of Our Nation 2010 Edition
We Are The Future of Our Nation 2010 Edition
This is the brain-child of Mrs Yinka Ogunde the Principal Consultant, Edumark Consult, which aims at inspiring patriotism and correct values in students of top secondary schools nationwide. Yearly, Edumark organises a nationwide essay competition with striking topics of national concern. The 2009 essay topic was: ‘My Blueprint for a Greater Nigeria’. She says ‘INEC should be sanitised and empowered to ensure free and fair elections which would produce good leaders while more job opportunities should be provided’ She was celebrated by the Edumark Consult at the NECA Hall, Ikeja on 3rd March,2010. Thus, Kith and Kin would always Support the Uniqueness of Your Child to Excel. See More Pictures Here => We Are The Future Of Our Nation 2010 Edition
